Here's how to answer it properly, in order.
Step 1: Find Out What's Actually in Your PC
You need four numbers: CPU model, GPU model, system RAM, and dedicated VRAM. Windows 11 gives you all of them without installing anything.
Settings → System → About shows your processor, installed RAM and Windows edition — but not your graphics card, the single most important spec. It's a starting point, not the answer.
dxdiag fills the gap. Press Win + R, type dxdiag, press Enter. The System tab confirms your CPU, memory and DirectX version; the Display tab gives the GPU name, driver version and memory. One trap: dxdiag's Approx. Total Memory figure adds dedicated VRAM and shared system memory, so a laptop with a 6 GB GPU can report something like 14 GB. The number that matters is the Display Memory (VRAM) line.
Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) → Performance is the cleanest VRAM check: select your GPU and read Dedicated GPU memory. The same tab's Disk entries tell you whether your drive is an SSD or an HDD, which now matters more than it used to. Steam users can also open Help → System Information.
Two gotchas for laptop owners. dxdiag often lists both an integrated and a discrete GPU, and the discrete card is the one games use. And an "RTX 4060 Laptop GPU" is a different chip from a desktop RTX 4060; manufacturers set laptop power limits across a wide range, so identical GPU names can perform very differently.
Step 2: Don't Install Anything to Check Compatibility
The classic compatibility checkers work the same way: you download a detection executable, it scans your hardware and uploads the result, then shows a verdict. That model dates from an era when browsers couldn't see anything about your machine, and it brings friction — security software flags detection utilities, and corporate machines block them.

Step 3: Understand What "Minimum" and "Recommended" Really Mean
There is no industry standard here, but a growing number of publishers now state their performance targets explicitly, which makes those sheets far more useful. The working translation for 2026:
- Minimum = roughly 1080p, 30 fps, low preset. Playable, not pleasant.
- Recommended = 1080p or 1440p, 60 fps, medium-to-high preset.
- Ultra tier, where offered = 1440p high refresh, or 4K/60.
Plenty of sheets still say nothing. Capcom's specs for Resident Evil Requiem list a GTX 1660 or RX 5500 XT minimum and an RTX 2060 or RX 6600 recommended, 16 GB of RAM and a 74 GB SSD install — but no target resolution or frame rate.

Three things jump out. Recommended-tier RAM has moved to 32 GB in the heaviest titles, recommended VRAM has moved past 8 GB, and Battlefield 6 additionally demands TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot enabled plus a VBS/HVCI-capable system for its anti-cheat — a gate that has nothing to do with performance and will stop you dead however fast your PC is.
VRAM Is Where Most PCs Fail First
The June 2026 Steam Hardware Survey puts 8 GB as the most common VRAM tier at 25.64%, with 16 GB behind it at 24.50% and 12 GB at 13.01%. (Valve has acknowledged misreporting VRAM on some cards in earlier surveys, so treat the figures as directional.) The installed base is still centered on 8 GB while recommended specs ask for 10–12 GB.
Running out of VRAM doesn't look like low frame rates. It looks like inconsistency — textures loading in late, a hitch every time you turn a corner, 1% lows collapsing while the average fps counter still reads fine. That's why a single average-fps number misleads, and why we built the FPS Estimator to account for resolution and settings instead. At 1080p, 8 GB still works in most 2026 releases with textures dialed back a notch; at 1440p with high textures and ray tracing on, 12 GB is the comfortable floor.
DirectX, Mesh Shaders, and Games That Simply Refuse to Launch
Some requirements aren't scalable — they're binary. DirectX 12 Ultimate (feature level 12_2) bundles DXR 1.1 ray tracing, variable rate shading, mesh shaders and sampler feedback. Qualifying hardware: NVIDIA RTX 20-series and newer, AMD RX 6000-series and newer, and Intel Arc.
Alan Wake 2 effectively required mesh shaders back in 2023; Remedy later added a fallback path, but the precedent stuck. DOOM: The Dark Ages goes further, requiring a hardware ray tracing–capable GPU even at minimum settings with no non-RT fallback. If your GPU predates that generation, turning settings down doesn't help — this is the one category where "close enough" doesn't exist.
SSDs Went From Nice-to-Have to Mandatory
DOOM: The Dark Ages lists an NVMe SSD at both tiers; Battlefield 6's recommended tier lists SSD; Monster Hunter Wilds and Resident Evil Requiem require SSD storage too. The reason is asset streaming: modern engines pull texture data continuously during play, and a mechanical drive can't feed them fast enough — which shows up as blurry pop-in and traversal stutter, not just long loading screens.
Microsoft's DirectStorage 1.4, previewed in March 2026 around GDC, adds Zstandard compression and a Game Asset Conditioning Library that Microsoft says can improve compression ratios by up to 50%, with vendor driver optimizations due in the second half of 2026. But GPU-decompression adoption in shipped games has stayed thin since the API launched, so "have a decent NVMe drive" remains the practical takeaway.
Upscaling and Frame Generation Rewrite the Math
This is the biggest change to compatibility checking in two years: a GPU that fails on paper can pass in practice.
NVIDIA: DLSS 4.5, announced at CES 2026, brings a second-generation transformer model for Super Resolution to all RTX GPUs across 400+ games and apps — RTX 20 and 30 series included, though those cards pay a heavier performance cost without native FP8 support. Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and the 6X mode remain RTX 50 series exclusives, across 250+ titles.
AMD: FSR 4 launched as an RDNA 4 exclusive, and FSR Redstone (ML frame generation, ray regeneration and neural radiance caching) targets the RX 9000 series. Crucially for older cards, AMD has now shipped official FSR 4.1 support to RDNA 3 / RX 7000 desktop GPUs using an INT8 model, covering 300-plus games, with RDNA 3 integrated graphics next in line.
Intel: XeSS 3 Multi-Frame Generation has rolled out via driver to Arc discrete GPUs and Core Ultra integrated graphics, and can be switched on in any title that already supports XeSS 2.
Two caveats. Frame generation multiplies smoothness, not responsiveness — latency tracks your base frame rate, so you want roughly 60 fps before enabling it. And it costs VRAM, so it's no fix for a card that's already memory-starved.
Five Mistakes That Cost People Money
- Comparing model numbers instead of benchmark results. An RTX 5060 is not automatically faster than an RTX 4070. Publishers list cross-generation equivalents — DOOM pairs an RTX 2060 Super with an RX 6600 — precisely because tier names don't map cleanly. Use a GPU tier list built on measured performance.
- Treating laptop and desktop GPUs as the same part. They share names and little else.
- Ignoring core counts. DOOM: The Dark Ages asks for 8 cores / 16 threads at minimum; a fast quad-core won't substitute.
- Forgetting everything but the GPU. A strong card behind a weak CPU wastes money — run a bottleneck check first.
- Assuming minimum spec covers your monitor. Minimum almost always means 1080p; on a 1440p or 4K panel, read the recommended row.
Your Five-Minute Pre-Purchase Checklist
Pull your CPU, GPU, RAM and VRAM from dxdiag and Task Manager. Confirm hardware ray tracing and mesh shader support if the game is from 2024 onward, and that it's installed on an SSD. Check non-performance gates like Windows 11, TPM 2.0 or Secure Boot. Then run the specs through Can I Run It for a pass/fail and the FPS Estimator for a frame rate at your resolution. Weighing an upgrade? PC Value says whether the part is priced sensibly.
Is 8 GB of VRAM still enough in 2026?
At 1080p, yes for most games, provided you'll drop texture quality one step in the heaviest titles. At 1440p with ray tracing enabled it's tight, and 12 GB is the realistic floor. The failure mode is stutter and texture pop-in rather than a low average frame rate, so average-fps benchmarks understate the problem.
Do I need to download anything to check if my PC can run a game?
No. Older compatibility checkers require a detection executable because that was the only way to read hardware from a web page years ago. Can DLSS or FSR make my PC meet the minimum requirements?
Sometimes, but read the sheet first. Several 2025 and 2026 requirement tiers already assume upscaling is enabled — Monster Hunter Wilds' 1080p/30 minimum renders internally at 720p, and its recommended tier assumes frame generation is on — so the headroom may already be spent. Upscaling also can't help if you fail a hard requirement such as mesh shader or ray tracing support.
What's the difference between minimum and recommended specs?
Minimum generally targets 1080p at 30 fps on the low preset; recommended targets 1080p or 1440p at 60 fps on medium-to-high. Neither is standardized, which is why the better sheets now state resolution, frame rate and preset explicitly. If a game lists no target, assume minimum means 1080p30 low.
Why does my game stutter even though I exceed the recommended specs?
The three usual culprits are VRAM exhaustion, storage speed and shader compilation. VRAM shortfall causes hitching on camera movement; a mechanical hard drive causes traversal stutter as assets stream in; first-run shader compilation causes brief freezes that settle after 20–30 minutes. Check Task Manager's GPU memory graph during a stutter to identify which one you're hitting.
