A spec sheet is a performance target, not a pass/fail test
Never read a requirements box without asking "at what resolution, what frame rate, and what preset?" A GPU listed under minimum and one under recommended are not doing the same job.
When EA published Battlefield 6's requirements it spelled this out. The minimum tier (RTX 2060 with a Core i5-8400) targets 1080p, 30fps, Low. The recommended tier (RTX 3060 Ti with a Core i7-10700) targets 1440p/60 on High, or 1080p at 80fps and up on Low. That is not "a bit more performance." It is roughly three times the pixel-and-frame workload.
Most publishers bury those targets or omit them entirely. When a sheet gives you none, assume the industry default: minimum means 1080p/30/Low, recommended means 1080p or 1440p/60/High.
Minimum means 1080p, 30fps, Low — and that is the whole promise
Minimum specs answer one narrow question: what is the cheapest hardware on which we will still say this game runs? The unspoken conditions are 1080p output, the Low preset, and a 30fps average rather than a 30fps floor. Doom: The Dark Ages is one of the more honest sheets, because Bethesda prints a target beside every tier — 1080p/60/Low at minimum, 1440p/60/High at recommended, 4K/60 at Ultra. Most publishers leave you guessing.
Minimum tiers also assume nothing else is running: no Discord overlay, no forty browser tabs, no OBS. Meet minimum exactly and the honest expectation is a game that is playable and often enjoyable, but stutters in crowds and looks softer than the marketing.
Recommended is the intended experience, not maximum settings
This is the most expensive misunderstanding in PC gaming. "Recommended" does not mean the sliders go all the way right. It means this is the configuration the developers tuned the game around — usually High, 60fps, at 1080p or 1440p.
Look at the gap between recommended and the top of the same sheet. Battlefield 6's recommended tier is an RTX 3060 Ti for 1440p/60 High. Its Ultra tier asks for an RTX 4080 or RX 7900 XTX with 32GB of RAM for 4K/60 or 1440p/144, and its Ultra++ tier names an RTX 5080 with a Ryzen 7 9800X3D for 4K at 144fps with DLSS. Doom: The Dark Ages tells the same story with VRAM instead of model numbers: 8GB at minimum, 10GB at recommended, 16GB for Ultra 4K.
If your goal is high refresh at 1440p, or anything maxed at 4K, recommended is your starting point rather than your destination. Our FPS estimator is more useful here than the spec sheet, because it gives you a number for your exact GPU and CPU pairing instead of a tier label.
The 2026 shift: upscaling is baked into the numbers
This is the change that matters most, and the reason old habits have stopped working. Publishers now quote an output resolution while rendering at a much lower internal one, letting DLSS, FSR or XeSS reconstruct the difference.
Crimson Desert, which reached PC on March 19, 2026, is the clearest example, because Pearl Abyss published the internal resolutions. Its minimum tier promises 1080p at 30fps on a GTX 1060 — upscaled from 900p. One rung up, that identical hardware is listed again for native 1080p/30. Native 1440p/60 needs an RTX 4070 or RX 7700 XT; native 4K/60 needs an RTX 5070 Ti or RX 9070 XT.
Frame generation has crept in too. Monster Hunter Wilds set the precedent ahead of its 2025 launch with a footnote stating the game "is expected to run at 1080p / 60 fps (with Frame Generation enabled) under the 'Medium' graphics setting." It drew heavy criticism, because frame generation needs a decent base frame rate to feel good.
Most publishers never state the upscaling level at all, so you cannot tell whether you are being sold Quality mode or Ultra Performance. Three practical consequences:
- The number on the box is not the number being rendered. Upscaling 1440p to 4K is close to visually free. Reconstructing 1080p from far below 900p is not — expect softness, shimmer and ghosting in fast motion.
- Older GPUs are penalized twice. A GTX 1660 has no DLSS support at all, so it falls back to FSR, generally weaker at aggressive ratios.
- "Native" has become a premium tier. On Crimson Desert's ladder, rendering natively costs roughly two GPU generations at every resolution.

Capcom's silence on Resident Evil Requiem is worth noting: it published hardware tiers with no stated resolution, frame rate or preset at all. A sheet with no target is a hint, not a promise.
All four demand 16GB of system RAM at minimum, and fast storage has stopped being optional — Doom: The Dark Ages asks for a 512GB or larger NVMe SSD, Crimson Desert for 150GB of SSD space. In 2026, 8GB of RAM and a mechanical hard drive are disqualifying.
VRAM is the wall you actually hit
Compute performance degrades gracefully. Video memory does not. You get texture pop-in, hitching whenever the camera turns, sometimes a hard crash — and dropping the resolution often does not fix it, because texture and ray-tracing buffers are largely resolution-independent.
Developers know this, which is why VRAM is drifting to the front of spec sheets. Bethesda's Doom: The Dark Ages requirements do not name a single GPU model. Every tier reads "NVIDIA or AMD hardware ray tracing-capable GPU with 8GB / 10GB / 16GB dedicated VRAM or better." The capacity is the requirement.
That collides with reality: 8GB remains the most common VRAM tier among Steam users, near 30% in 2026 surveys — though Valve has acknowledged misreporting VRAM capacity on some cards, so treat any exact figure as approximate. Treat 8GB as a 1080p budget, 12GB as the comfortable 1440p floor, 16GB as what you want for ray tracing, 4K or high-resolution texture packs. CPU requirements are about 1% lows, not average fps
Spec sheets list CPUs as though they set your frame rate. Mostly they do not — they set your frame consistency. A GPU-limited scene averages what the GPU can push; a CPU-limited scene is where 1% lows collapse and the game feels bad even when the counter says 60.
That is why open-world traversal, dense multiplayer maps and simulation-heavy titles punish weak CPUs so specifically. A mid-range chip can hold a respectable average and still fall into the high 30s crossing a busy city, while a large-cache part like a Ryzen 7 7800X3D keeps the GPU fed and flattens those frame-time spikes. Battlefield 6 naming X3D chips at both top tiers is not marketing noise: 64-player servers are a CPU problem.
Ignore the "or better" clause and check core and thread counts instead: Doom: The Dark Ages asks for 8 cores and 16 threads at minimum, in every tier. If you are unsure whether your processor is holding back your graphics card, the bottleneck calculator will tell you which side is the limiter.
What actually happens if you fall below minimum
It runs badly but it runs. The common case. You are 10-20% short on GPU and get 22-28fps at 1080p Low. Dropping the render scale, or switching an upscaler to Performance mode, often claws back enough to make it playable.
It runs, then dies. The VRAM case. The game looks fine in the opening area, then stutters violently or crashes in a dense level. Cut texture and shadow quality first, not resolution.
It refuses to start. The hard-block case, and it is getting more common. Doom: The Dark Ages needs a hardware ray-tracing GPU and will not run on a GTX 1080. Resident Evil Requiem lists Windows 11 on both tiers, not Windows 10. Battlefield 6 requires TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot for its anti-cheat. Several Nixxes-handled PC ports refuse to launch with a "requires a CPU that supports the AVX2 instruction set" error, and a Helldivers 2 update made AVX2 a hard requirement mid-life, crashing players on older processors. No settings menu fixes this.
Turning a spec sheet into a decision
The checks are not equally important, so work in this order. Hard blocks first — OS version, ray-tracing capability, Secure Boot, AVX2, SSD — because those are yes or no. VRAM second, against the tier you want to play at rather than the one you technically qualify for. CPU third, on cores, threads and generation. GPU class last.
Then check it against your actual machine, not a mental model of it. Can I play a game if I only meet the minimum specs?
Yes, but expect 1080p, the Low preset, and roughly 30fps on average with dips below that. Minimum specs promise playability, not comfort. For a fast shooter, meeting minimum exactly is usually frustrating.
Does "recommended" mean I can max out the settings?
No. Recommended almost always means the High preset at 1080p or 1440p targeting 60fps. Ultra presets, ray tracing and 4K live one or two tiers above. Battlefield 6's ladder runs recommended, Ultra, then Ultra++, and the top rung asks for an RTX 5080 and double the system RAM.
Do modern system requirements assume DLSS or FSR is turned on?
Increasingly, yes. Crimson Desert's minimum tier reaches 1080p/30 by upscaling from 900p, and Monster Hunter Wilds' recommended tier reaches 1080p/60 only with frame generation enabled. Always look for an internal render resolution note — if a publisher quotes 4K without one, be skeptical.
Is 8GB of VRAM still enough in 2026?
For 1080p at medium-to-high settings, generally yes. For 1440p, ray tracing or high-resolution texture packs, it is the most likely thing to break your experience. Doom: The Dark Ages already asks for 10GB at its 1440p tier and 16GB for 4K.
Does my CPU still matter if I only play at 4K?
It matters less for average frame rate and just as much for smoothness. At 4K the GPU is usually the limiter, but traversal stutter and crowded multiplayer maps stay CPU-bound — the exact moments where a weak CPU ruins the feel.
I fall short of recommended — what should I upgrade first?
Find which component is actually limiting you before spending anything. If you are below the VRAM figure for your target resolution, the GPU is the fix and nothing else will help. If your GPU sits idle while frame times spike, it is the CPU. And adding a second stick to reach 16GB in dual channel is often the cheapest meaningful upgrade, since every major 2026 release treats 16GB as the floor.
