16GB is the new 8GB
For years, 8GB of RAM was the safe default for PC gaming. That era is over. Across the games we analyzed, 16GB is now the single most common recommended figure, appearing in 61% of all titles — more than every other RAM tier combined.
The generational shift is even starker when you sort by release year. The share of games recommending 16GB or more has risen almost every single year:

The trend is unmistakable: in 2015, fewer than half of new games wanted 16GB. In 2026, more than three in four do. Storage: the average is fine, the outliers are monsters
RAM has crept up steadily. Storage has done something different — it's bifurcated. The average game in our dataset asks for a very manageable ~30GB, and the majority of titles (1,778 of them) still fit under 20GB. Plenty of indie and esports games remain refreshingly light.
But at the top end, modern blockbusters have ballooned into genuine storage hogs. The heaviest install requirements we recorded:

A single one of these games can occupy more space than an entire 128GB or 256GB SSD. The practical takeaway: the era of the small boot drive is over. If you buy prebuilt or spec a build, a 1TB NVMe SSD is now the sensible floor — two or three AAA installs will fill anything smaller.
Why requirements jumped after 2023
The data shows the steepest climb landing in 2024–2026, and the timing isn't a coincidence. That's when games built primarily for the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S generation — consoles with 16GB of unified memory and fast SSDs as a baseline — started shipping in volume on PC. Developers no longer target the last-gen floor. When the console baseline is 16GB and an NVMe SSD, the PC "recommended" spec follows.
Upscaling changed the equation too. More and more requirement sheets now quietly assume DLSS, FSR, or XeSS is switched on to hit their stated frame rates — which means the raw hardware demand behind a given "recommended" tier is often higher than it looks.

Methodology
We analyzed the published minimum and recommended system requirements for 3,985 PC games in the PC Game Check database, filtered to titles with valid, parseable CPU and RAM requirements (excluding entries with missing or placeholder data). Year-over-year figures are based on each game's release year for titles launched between 2015 and 2026. RAM and storage figures reflect the values stated in each game's official requirements as recorded in our database. Averages exclude a small number of extreme outliers (e.g. non-game software entries) to avoid skew. Data current as of 2026.
